Augustana Return With Arena-Ready Third Album

Augustana has spent the past eight years gearing up for their third album. “This is our chance to really show what we can do,” boasts frontman Daniel Layus.
“
It feels like the most true expression of who this band is in its most basic form.
”
Daniel Layus
Drawing inspiration from the career-solidifying third records of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, Daniel and his bandmates hid away for two years to write songs with the same sonic and emotional scope as these legends before him. Augustana instead follows where The Killers left off, updating the arena-rock, Americana vibes of Springsteen and Petty with an irresistably fresh palate that plants the Cali quartet firmly ahead of their peers.
It’s not a coincidence, then, that Daniel sounds unmistakably like Tom Petty on the roots ballad, “Borrowed Time,” or the lazy rhythm and bass on “Hurricane” struts like the most pensive of the E Street catalogue. The band did their homework, and diligently borrow from the history of classic rock as every modern rocker should. Their research would explain the soaring choruses, chugging riffs and pained lyrics predominantly featured throughout the album, but digging deeper would have hopefully curtailed the relentless magnitude of each track. As if every song is combating the next to replace “Where The Streets Have No Name,” Augustana runs the gamut of stadium-aimed songs to an occasional disadvantage. Listening from beginning to end can be tiresome, but the few songs that offer variation (such as those named above) stand out even more.
