In ten adrenaline-pumping tracks, Butch Walker & The Black Widows perform some of Walker’s best work. Spade showcases his peerless lyrical talent alongside hook-heavy chords that become that kind of songs you play over and over again until the neighbors start to complain.
While the album’s first single, “Summer of ’89,” tackles the nostalgia that comes with growing old, other tracks are less heady, and more straightforward rock and roll. “Synthesizers” has tremendous spirit that speaks to the realness Walker offers the technology laced music game: “(“I don’t have a synthesizer / I can still get down like Duran Duran in 1985″).
A switch to a bit of country-western flair in “Closest Thing to You” brings the project some layer and depth, while still creating a signature sound for Walker. While “Dublin Crow” makes a “folk-sy” departure from a bit of the norm.
No matter the song, no matter the musical genre, Spade is a continuously fun release that never gets boring… So listen with a sense of open-minded adventure and comfort because that is surely what Butch Walker & The Black Widows offer.
