On 25th Anniversary of “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying,” Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Visits Street Date For Exclusive Interview

“
This is the record that basically put us on the map.
”
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, on 'Peace Sells...'
Twenty five years is a significant anniversary for any union, whether it’s a marriage or a band. The fact that two-and-a-half decades have passed since the release of Megadeth‘s seminal 1986 album Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying is not lost on founder (and guitar God) Dave Mustaine. He and the band marked the anniversary with a major (dare we say “mega”?) re-issue of the album in the form of the Peace Sells… boxed set. Watch as Mustaine visits Street Date for an intimate interview to discuss the release, his relationship with his peers (ie: Metallica), and plans for the new Megadeth album 13, due this Fall.
The Peace Sells… boxed set is no joke. It weighs in at over 5 pounds, containing 5 CDs and 3 vinyl records, is chock-full of extras and packaged in an insanely-cool lenticular box. Among the treasures it contains are a newly-remastered version of the original album and a complete live concert from the Phantasy Theater in Cleveland in 1987. The concert sounds particularly killer on vinyl, with songs from the album like “Wake Up Dead,” “Bad Omen” and “Devil’s Island” taking center stage. In our interview, Mustaine talk about how Megadeth‘s lyrical content has always set them apart from the other metal bands that are considered their peers:
“The element that makes it timely as well as timeless is what the content, lyrically, is about. Bands that were playing back when we played had pretty similar music. But when it came to the lyrics, that’s when we went our own way.”
“
I'm looking forward to the time when me and Lars and James and David Ellefson make a record together.
”
Known in the past for stirring up controversy among bandmates and rivals, these days Mustaine is fully self-aware, with little desire for conflict. As he approaches a new round of concerts with the “Big Four” (the beyond-awesome combo of Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer), he talks of his repaired relationships with members of those bands, in particular Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, with whom he says he’d like to record new music.

The Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? 25th anniversary boxed set is available now at Amazon and the Megadeth web store.
