Shape-Shifting With Tori Amos – Watch Live Performance Of Songs From “Night of Hunters”

“
You don't have to leave your chair and you've crossed the universe because of a storyteller.
”
Tori Amos, on themes from 'Night of Hunters'
Night of Hunters is not a typical album project, even for Tori Amos, an artist whose career has been anything-but-typical. Hunters is a 21st Century take on a classical song cycle, with a plotline intricately weaved by Amos, who tells the story through the eyes of a female character named Tori. It is a stunning piece of work that defies classification, and represents one of the greatest challenges Amos has tackled in her storied career.
Street Date is proud to present this intimate studio performance by Tori Amos, complete with an interview in which she discusses the creation of this project and lays bare the story of Annabelle, the “spirit guide” who leads Tori through this Night of Hunters.
Tori Amos Interview
For this performance Tori Amos selected three songs from Night of Hunters which represent distinct parts of the Tori/Annabelle storyline. In this first piece titled “Nautical Twilight,” the protagonist realizes she has turned her back on her own inner power and doing so has had destructive consequences on her life and relationship.

“
Treat it like a sonic cathedral. that's how you need to build a song cycle.
”
The next video picks up the story just as “he,” the man with whom our protagonist has had a relationship, has appeared to Tori as a ghost and revealed more of the details on what drove them apart. Tori is beginning to understand that despite the damage done to their relationship, their love for each other was deep and may yet survive the current tumult… if only they can find each other again.

“
The (ancient) poets could turn a battle in favor of their own army. That's how powerful they were.
”
Amos wrapped up her performance with the cycle’s final song “Carry.” This song closes the saga of the character Tori and reveals that she has submitted to the force of Love, letting this experience open her heart and bring closure to her search for answers about “him.” In “Carry,” the dawn has come, the sun is rising, and the protagonist cries out in celebration of the knowledge she has gained.
Help me see with the dawn
That those that have left
Are not gone
But they carry on
