To say it’s one of the most unique Christmas compilation albums of all time would be the understatement of the holiday season. In The Christmas Groove is a holiday LP packed to the brim with funky fresh flavor on 12 rare soul, funk and blues cuts rediscovered from Christmases past.

It’s not often that a Christmas album like In The Christmas Groove comes around. A Christmas album in which the songs are fun, enjoyable and most importantly stand out through the clutter of annual rushed Christmas LP’s is almost unheard of in 2011. There’s even a good chance you’ll find yourself listening to the record all the way into in summer months just because the songs make you feel so good. But what makes In The Christmas Groove even more special is that it consists mainly of obscure 45 B-sides and tracks one-off moments when the “good groove met the jingle bells to devastating effect.”

In the past, most fellow funkees with a love for soulful, rootsy tunes with a Christmas vibe turned to 1973′s A Motown Christmas, an album that has long served as the quintessential go-to LP around this time of year. However, that changed very quickly for those who gave In The Christmas Groove a shot. The records release marks the first time in a long time that funkers can rejoice and bask in the spirit of the season while grooving to a fresh Christmas album that really gets the funk out.

Over the years, there have been a few similar releases such as James Brown‘s Funky Christmas (originally released in 1995). But as far as there being a groundbreaking, memorable Christmas album of this genre for the next generation that has the ability to stand tall next to a classic like A Motown Christmas, In The Christmas Groove is the closest we’ve come in almost three decades, which really makes this album the bees knees.
