I asked friends: 'Do you think it's crazy to have this song?'
Chris Glover, aka Penguin Prison
“My name is Chris Glover, but the name of my music project is Penguin Prison.” With that opening sentence in our interview, native New Yorker Chris Glover explains how one of the most promising new acts in music came together. This was a case of a good song idea growing into a full-blown concept for a band. Glover didn’t set out to start Penguin Prison, but in the magical way that things happen when a good idea is born, his exciting solo compositions quickly grew into something that cried out for the support of a full live band. Click through and watch as Glover treats us to three acoustic renditions of songs from his debut album Penguin Prison, and listen in on our exclusive interview.

One of the most compelling tracks on Penguin Prison is also one of Glover’s oldest compositions. “Golden Train” is rife with Glover’s on-point commentary about the state of the world, and the disconnect between the powers-that-be and “the rest of us.”

The next song in this session is the one that has turned the eyes of the music world towards the Penguin Prison project and this album. “Don’t F@#k With My Money” is becoming a sensation online and at MTV, with Glover’s Occupy Wall Street-themed video striking a chord with people without even a hint of pandering to followers of the movement. In truth, the song was written long before the first Occupiers moved into Zuccotti Park last Fall.

Glover’s final song in this studio performance is titled “A Funny Thing” and is also from the Penguin Prison album. This tune shows yet another side of the artist – and man who we believe is equally compelling on uptempo, dance-able numbers as he is sitting alone in a room with an acoustic guitar. Glover has purposely arranged the Penguin Prison project to allow for excellence at both ends of the spectrum, with lyrics and themes that are deep enough to survive the scrutiny of multiple listens.
