On The Smooth Side Of Soul, the incomparable Najee shows no sign of slowing down on and still went to great lengths as he always has to achieve the sound he desired for his new record. This time though, the jazz superstar recruited keyboardist/producer Jeff Lorber (Dave Koz, Michael Franks) as well as saxophonist/producer Darren Rahn (Wayman Tisdale, Eric Darius) to help in getting the record to the point of perfection that has been the standard for all of Najee‘s past work.

With the aid of a few household names by the likes of Phil Perry, Chris Big Dog Davis, James Lloyd and aforementioned keyboardist/producer Jeff Lorber, the albums resulting sound after what must have been a rigorous recording project is nothing short of incredible. Songs like You Tube and Mari feel fresh and relevant to the jazz world today and are graced with some of the records best performances that will surely give you chills.

The fresh sound that Hit The Lights sought for their new record that would become Invicta was brought to life by the masterful techniques of producers Mike Sapone (Taking Back Sunday, Brand New) and Machine (Lamb of God, Four Year Strong). The duo serve as an unorthodox production team of sorts, but in the end their contribution to Invicta gives it the diverse, yet cohesive sound that the band envisioned; which was not an easy feat by any means considering the background that both these industry veterans came from.

The original spark and excitement that was bleeding out of the bands earlier work is brought back out and to the forefront by Sapone and Machine, and was the key that the band had longed for since the departure of original vocalist Colin Ross in 2007. But perhaps one of the most unique things about Hit The Lights new album is the way that you can really hear many different sounds each time you listen to the record; again a credit to the records production. The way that the songs have a real live feel to them that feels significantly less flawlessly polished is what sets Invicta apart from the bands previous work. The new, raw feel of the record has a blend of pop, epic stadium-esque anthems and even some of the most upbeat style writing that the band has ever done in songs like Gravity that all fuse together to make a fresh sound on Invicta.

When looking at how Hit The Lights follow up to Skip School, Start Fights ranks up against the rest of their catalog, they have seemingly done everything right on Invicta, especially in the way they’ve reinvented themselves from both a lyrical and musical standpoint. With all now officially said and done, the final decision will be made by the fans, who will ultimately choose how this album will be remembered.

The announcement of The Secret Policeman’s Ball comes just weeks after the release of AI’s compilation record Chimes Of Freedom, which featured over 70 artist renditions of Bob Dylan songs, also in honor of the organizations 50 years of service to the world. That wasn’t their first compilation though, as they dropped Instant Karma in 2007 that featured the songs of John Lennon in an effort to raise awareness of the conditions in Darfur.

AI’s latest collaboration of sorts with the music/entertainment industry is the culmination of the groups 50th anniversary celebrations and will again feature some of today’s top music and comedy acts in a live event to be held on March 4th at New York City’s historical Radio City Music Hall. To ensure that the night is nothing short of memorable, the ball will be bringing the likes of Coldplay, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Mumford & Sons, Russel Brand, Reggie Watts and much more together on one stage to perform – making the night something no one should even consider missing.

Here’s a preview of what’s in store on 2012, this is Ringo Starr performing new song “Think It Over” in his home studio.

2012 will prove to be a big year for Starr, who has a massive European tour planned (find show dates and ticket information here). Do Ringo and his All Starr Band have plans to tour in the United States? No word yet, though the best way to find out might be to ask Ringo on his Facebook page. There you’ll also find information about his release week activities which include a live town-hall-style radio session and a performance at The Troubadour in Los Angeles.

A second single, “Blue Jeans” followed suit as an exercize in glamorous pop melancholy. Its grainy, nostalgic video solidified Lana’s signature aura. Mixing documentary footage with sultry shots of  the singer vamping for the camera, it positioned her as a figure from the past – another bygone victim of pop culture.

When Lana del Rey‘s third single (and accompanying video) “Born to Die” dropped later that fall, it seemed as though the young singer was poised at the precipice of breakthrough stardom. She had it all – the talent, the looks, the style, the buzz.

But then there was the Saturday Night Live performance. In the span of two nationally televised songs, her entire house of cards seemed to crumble before our eyes.

She’s not ready for prime time, she’s too young, she’s a terrible performer, her career is over – these were the headlines plastered across music sites the next day.

All these proclamations, of course, were equally (and probably more) overwrought than those issued earlier in her praise. The truth is, Lana Del Rey is neither the next coming of Mozart nor an absolute failure. She is a talented singer and has the potential to be a great pop star, but like any young artist is  still maturing.

So, after all that she releases her first LP this week. Titled Born To Die, the album delivers on the strength of her early singles and offers a more fully fleshed out portrayal of her aesthetic. Is it, as many seemed to be hoping, the pop album to end all pop albums? No, unfortunately not. But it is a very strong first effort from this promising young artist.

Much of the speculation that surrounds Leonard Cohen these days centers on the question of whether or not he will tour again. At a listening party of Old Ideas in New York recently, Cohen indicated he was eager to get back out on the road. “I’m looking forward to rehearsing these songs with my band,” said the singer, during a discussion about the new record. With such spare production and so few musicians playing on the album, it’s anyone’s guess what form these songs will take in Cohen’s live show once a full band is introduced.

Tank Full of Blues is the third blues album that Dion has released since 2005′s Bronx in Blue. Together the albums have opened a whole new chapter in his career and have taken his music in a direction that would have been hard to imagine if you heard him singing 50 years ago.

Starting out in the late 1950′s, Dion was the lead singer in a doo-wop group that he and his friends formed called Dion and the Belmonts. They started out singing on the street corners of Manhattan, but their talents attracted the attention of Laurie Records and soon they had a recording contract. Their first big breakthrough came with the single “I Wonder Why,” which earned them national tours and television appearances and established them as a household name in the US.

In 1960, Dion left the group to pursue a solo career and had three popular singles with “The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue,” and “Ruby Baby.” This run as a solo artist solidifiedDion‘s reputation as one of the most popular vocalists of the time who in part defined the sound of pre-British Invasion American pop music.

Tank Full of Blues sees still Dion continuing to engage with music as a medium for self expression, though  times have changed significantly since the days of “The Wanderer.”  Tank Full of Blues is an intensely personal record that sees Dion reflecting on different elements of his life – his family, his career, and his hometown New York City. Having produced the album and written all but two of its songs, Dion has made an album that says a lot about himself, both as a musician and a person.

The other big news  for longtime Dion  fans who haven’t checked out his newer material is that he is no longer just a singer. On songs like the opening title track, “Tank Full of Blues,” he shows himself to be an accomplished guitarist by laying down some nasty Chicago blues licks.

From start to finish Tank Full of Blues is chock full of traditional blues and roots rock numbers that show Dion to be a classic American musician still at the top of his game.

The duo first linked up when Danger Mouse and his production team were seeking the perfect fit that would give his album ROME the balance it needed, and Norah was just that. After contributing three songs to the album, the two knew they had something special and immidiatly started work on Jones new album.

Jones first release since 2009′s The Fall will be comprised of all new original songs written entirely by Jones and Mouse. Little Broken Hearts is shaping up to be a very fascinating look at how Norah will attempt to reinvent herself  in an effort to stay relevant in an industry that changes drastically as each day passes.

The record will also create a whole new way in which fans perceive both of them, which makes it is as equally risky as ambitious for both artists as they are writing all the songs by themselves and then recording all instruments themselves as well with Jones on piano, keyboards, bass, and guitar, and Danger Mouse contributing drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and string arrangements.

Lookout for Little Broken Hearts in Spring 2012!

For a project so ambitious, The Goat Rodeo Sessions success on such a large scale was expected because of the cast involved, but there was sure to be some uncertainty because of such a challenge in the hearts of the people involved as well as fans. However, all that is behind them now as the record has proved to be a great success in the eyes of fans and music critics alike who have dubbed the collaboration as “genre-proof”. It’s not often that all of the incredible elements executed on the record are graced with so many different styles that blend so flawlessly together, and its success has shown that anything is possible as well as the fact that art can be even more beautiful than you imagined when the right people with the right mindset are present.

Since their inception in 2000, the duo of Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have released four studio albums and become widely recognized for their signature style that fuses acoustic folk with colorful Latin guitar licks. Their unmatched style has been embraced by fans since their first album and by even wider audiences with each release. But as they continue to progress and become more successful, the demand and desire for a twist in the mix has become imminent.

Skeptics who fear that the addition of C.U.B.A. could make a mockery of the bands greatest work have absolutely nothing to fear. Area 52 adds a ton of flavor to the bands essence and sound that could never have even been imagined when first listening to the original versions of Tamacun and Hanuman. The addition of the orchestra compliments the bands already incredible sound in such a flawless fashion that makes every song feel so fresh. It’s no wonder why the duo chose C.U.B.A. because when it all comes together with the help of masterful development and production, the unique perspective to the original tunes truly could not have been possible with any other musical accompaniment.

Recording Area 52 was perhaps one of the smartest things that Rodrigo y Gabriela could have done, especially at this point in their career. The fact that the record offers such strong, unforced new twists on songs that have been embedded in the hearts and minds of fans over the years will make Rod/Gab lovers of new and old fall in love with the band all over again.
