“
This record definitely deals with the emotions of what I was feeling when we were touring.

Bethany Cosentino
A long time ago, a huge tornado transported a young girl to a magical place where the people, animals and scenery looked vaguely familiar, but completely out of this world. After many adventures, the girl found herself wishing to return to the place where she belonged. She began clicking her heels and repeating one phrase: “There’s no place like home.” Whether or not Best Coast‘s Bethany Cosentino ever thought of herself as Dorothy, the parallels are clear. When the whirlwind created by her first album Crazy For You carried her far, far away from home, she began longing to return to California. “Home” is a dominant theme on Best Coast’s sophomore record, aptly titled The Only Place. The inimitable Squarepusher, one of the original creative souls that sparked the experimental evolution of electronic music in the early 90′s, returns to his brazen, labyrinthine signature sound with Ufabulum. Hardly for the faint at heart or the casual dance music fan, Ufabulum challenges as it bespells. Squarepusher‘s songs have never been comforting, or inviting; but once you’ve found a way inside, the experience becomes spiritual. His tweaks and glitches sound as harmonious as pebbles rushing downstream during a thunderstorm, his twisting, erratic rhythms ebb and flow as the foot traffic of morning rush hour, or traveling gazelle. Floral exaggerations aside, Ufabulum achieves what at the core of electronic music all artists strive for: a body of compelling, difficult, and irresistible songs.

The Ryan Shaw faithful who have been following the R&B singer since his 2007 debut have been salivating even at the thought of new material. They won’t have to wait any longer though as Shaw is set to drop his new album Real Love; an album that could make or break his career at this point with expectations being so high for a follow up to 2010′s It Gets Better. But fear not as Shaw’s new album packs in 12 beautiful numbers bursting at the seams with love, emotion and soul that make it hard to argue against Real Love being the most masterful work of his young career.

T. Bone Burnett shows his low-key genius once again on Storm & Grace, one of the coolest albums of 2012 so far and one that is sure to turn some heads for singer Lisa Marie Presley. Already two of music’s most interesting characters on their own, Burnett and Presley make the most of their collaboration, stripping away all of the production and studio pretense that marked Presley’s most recent work, presenting her vocals at the forefront of a set of tunes that evoke misty, mysterious days and nights in the backwaters of Memphis, Tennessee.more

Stephane Wrembel discovered the guitar as a teenager, and the instrument has rarely left his hands in the years since. Classically trained, Wrembel found his calling in the Sinti style of guitar playing which is a trademark of the Gypsy culture in France and other parts of Europe. He incorporates this style of playing into his songwriting, wrapping sumptuous string arrangements around folk, rock and jazz concepts that reveal Wrembel’s masterful skill. On new album Origins tackles themes as diverse as the 2011 disaster in Japan, on “Tsunami,” and the science of astronomy and the universe on “Voyager (for Carl Sagan).”Watch Stephane Wrembel Play

Variety is not always a virtue when it comes to making an album, but in the case of Tu Fawning‘s sophomore album A Monument, the band employs the idea of variety with skill and grace. On an album with songs that move from guitar-driven reverb rock to ethereal, percussion-heavy numbers, the one constant is vocalist Corinna Rep‘s heavenly voice. “Blood Stains” and “Bones” stand out after a first pass; “Wager” and “Skin And Bone” are tracks that will burrow deeper into your head with repeated listening. Click through to watch their new video for “Anchor” and find out when to catch them on tour this summer.more
